[Solor Energy Tecnology][Research Subject : Analysis of Silicon Single Crystal Growth Process for Photovoltaic Substrate ]
[Research Duration : 1997/APR.`2001/MAR.]
[Outline of Research : Silicon is widely used as substrate for solar cell. To reduce the producing cost, solar grade (SOG) silicon, which means the low purity silicon compared to semiconductor grade (SEG) silicon, must be used as feed material with high productivity rate. Therefore, it must be needed to increase the crystal growth rate. In the case of low purity silicon feed, however, impurities in the crystal are usually increased by increasing the growth rate. The efficiency of solar cell will be decreased when the low grade silicon crystals are used as substrates. To avoid this phenomenon, melt flow control seems one of the good methods due to the dynamic segregation coefficient. If the melt flow velocity is decreased near the crystal growth front, the incorporated impurity concentration in the crystal is decreased. To control the melt flow field and obtain a high purity silicon crystal, effect of externally applied magnetic field on the melt convection during the floating zone (FZ) crystal growth process is experimentally and analytically investigating.][No.1331]

[Research Duration : 1998/APR.`2003/MAR.]
[Outline of Research : Open MRI-guided surgical treatment, or MR/T (MR Treatment), is a promising approach toward the minimum invasive surgery (MIS) and just-in-time diagnosis during the surgery. It leads to the better Quality-of-life (QOL) and the lower medicare costs. However, open MRIs are not roomy. Their imaging ability is not equivalent to high-tesla MRIs. Functional MRI (fMRI) is not practical. To enhance open-MRI guided surgery, we study a combination of MRI-compatible surgical manipulator(s) and near-infrared optical measurement system. The manipulator assists accessing to the legions, and optical system visualizes distribution of oxi/deoxidization of blood flow. We also study fast imaging sequence and intraoperative registration. The goal of this study is to demonstrate a concurrent system of diagnosis and treatment and its clinical evaluation. It is a joint project of MEL, The University of Tokyo, The Osaka University, and Tokyo Womens Medical Collage.]

[Outline of Research : We develop two types of hybrid functionally gradient materials (FGM) for hard and soft tissue@replacement. For hard tissue replacement, the FGMs used for such as artificial bones or artificial teeth are to be made as follows; the surface attached to hard tissue is made of highly porous ceramics and the internal part is made of metals. For soft tissue replacement, the FGMs used for such as artificial vessels or artificial hearts are to be made as follows; the surface against blood must have antithrombogenicity and the other surface against soft tissue must be biocompatible. The biological and mechanical compatibility of these FGMs are examined. We introduce plasma spray, nitriding, ion implantation into manufacturing process of the FGMs for hard tissue replacement, and for soft tissue replacement, make fundamental research of the FGMs by utilizing polymers made of polyurethane which is expected to show antithrombogenicity. [Research Duration : 1996/APR.`2001/MAR.]
[Outline of Research : We have proposed a new method for the construction of autonomy of mobile robots and demonstrated the effectiveness of our proposed method theoretically and experimentally. In this method, we define the robustness to the changing environment (Robust behaviors) and the various dynamic skills (Skill behaviors) as "Dynamic behavior modules", and construct the autonomy of mobile robots by a non-hierarchic combination of these modules. The target mobile robots of our research are a wheeled inverted pendulum type robot and a biped walking type robot. These robots, one being wheeled and the other legged, are typical examples of statically unstable robots. Here, "Robust behaviors" mainly means the stabilization control of the robot using the estimation of the position and attitude of the robot and of the local ground roughness, while "Skill behaviors" mainly means dynamic skills to negotiate the overall ground roughness.][No.3440]

[Outline of Research : Under extreme environment conditions found in micro-machine, head-disk interface in magnetic storage systems and outer space, the attraction force acting between the surfaces is predominant and affects the tribology characteristics significantly, because the external load and the weight are very small. Therefore, we should examine not only the friction force and load but also the attraction force to clarify the tribology characteristics in such conditions. In the first phase of this study, we have developed a micro tribotester that can measure the attraction force and analyze the surface in high resolution. In the second phase, we examine the effect of the surface treatment such as evaporation and ion irradiation and the effect of the ambient condition on the attraction force.
