-Toward the Establishment of Human Friendly and Environmentally Conscious Technologies in Robotics-
'99 ICAR, the 9th International Conference on Advanced Robotics, will be held at Keidanren Hall in Tokyo, Japan, October 25 to 27, 1999. The main objective of '99 ICAR is to provide an opportunity for the exchange of information on various aspects of research and development in advanced robotics. Robotics has contributed to the automation and improved design of manufacturing environments. The emerging thrust is also in non-manufacturing areas like agriculture, civil engineering, plant maintenance, underwater operation, natural disaster prevention, space, demining, medical and health care, and supporting human daily life. These tasks require robots to be more dexterous and intelligent because the working environments are more complex and unstructured. In this conference, "Advanced Robotics" refers to any area challenging research in the development of robots which can effectively and dexterously execute complex tasks in unstructured environments. On behalf of the '99 ICAR committees, we invite you to submit your papers addressing fundamental technologies, new concepts and new challenging aspects in advanced robotics.
The 1st ICAR conference was established in 1983, as an offshoot of the Williamsburg Summit, as the part of the International Collaboration Project "Advanced Robotics". With this in mind, the subsequent biennial ICAR's have focused on international collaborations in advanced robotics. In '99 ICAR, this focus will also be maintained and several events to encourage international collaboration will be planned.
Following the '99 ICAR, the 30th International Symposium on Robotics (30th ISR) will be held from October 27 to 29, 1999 at the same venue and the 1999 International Robot Exhibition will be held from October 26 to 29, 1999 at the Tokyo Big Sight in Tokyo. Before the '99 ICAR, IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS'99) will be held from October 17 to 21, 1999 in Kyonju, Korea. We are very pleased to host the international event and believe that participation in the conference will provide a fruitful opportunity to researchers and engineers who have interests in advanced robotics.
