INTRODUCTION
Lean ignition limit characteristics of Autogas (20/80 propane/butane mixture), propane, butane, and CNG were investigated as a function of initial pressure and temperature in a 1024.5cc constant volume cylindrical combustion chamber. These tests were done in conjunction with a heavy-duty spark ignition(SI) lean burn engine development project. The chamber had a temperature control system using six cartridge heaters (3kW total), and air cooling. Data were taken at four initial temperatures from 50C to 200C and four initial pressures, from atmospheric to 2MPa. A magnetically-coupled mixing fan was activated for 10 minutes before each test in order to maintain a uniform fuel-air concentration and temperature. The spark plug was the same as used in the engine (NGK T6118B, gap 0.5mm) and located at the top of the chamber in the center of the cover. At lower initial temperatures care had to be taken so that the maximum pressure limit of the chamber (20MPa) was not exceeded.
