6. ER^GMM Actuation Technology
@@Electrorheological fluids (ER-fluids) are new materials which undergo fast reversible change in viscosity on application of an external electric field (electro-rheology). They have a potential application in industrial tribology problems - particularly those where real-time control of tribological characteristics is desirable. In this research, controlling EHL characteristics using uniformity type ER-fluid, is being carried out.
@@Giant magnetostrictive materials (GMM) are thought to have many potential applications owing to their ability to produce large force in a short response time. In our study, we are investigating the dynamic properties and behavior of GMM during micro-second periods and in order to make use of these characteristics we are developing a pico-liter liquid-drop injector which pushes a piston using a GMM rod in a fine tube.
