2. Microfactory Technologies
The downsizing production system, which we have newly proposed as "microfactory", can help not only in saving energy, spaces and resources but also in improving flexibility for model change and controllability of the atmosphere. Eventually, the microfactory can realize a miniaturized production system. The key to the microfactory is downsizing machine tools and elements without reduction of accuracy. Moreover, design theory to assemble them properly is necessary.
The microlathe developed by MEL is capable of cutting brass using only 1/1000 the energy consumption with equal or better accuracy compared to that of the conventional large one. This improved the potential of the microfactory and triggered the development of other micro components, such as the milling machine, press machine, robot arm and manipulator. Development of such components aims to realize the microfactory by using the machining technique.
