6. Countermeasures Against Greenhouse Effect
In the last quarter of this century, global environmental problems, such as depletion of ozone layer by CFCs, acid rain, etc., have emerged as major scientific, political and social issues. Concerning these problems, the world has increasingly focused on global warming by carbon dioxide because it has direct linkage to energy consumption. The major subject is the development of technologies for the fixation/sequestration of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels to cope with the huge amount of carbon dioxide release.
This research program addresses the feasibility of sequestering carbon dioxide recovered in power plants by absorbing it in deep seawater, through investigations on physicochemical mechanisms encountered in the direct contact process of liquid carbon dioxide with seawater under high pressure and low temperature environment.
