Closed Cycle Magneto-Hydro-Dynamic (CCMHD) generators operating at temperatures greater than 2300K with a non-equilibrium rare gas plasma seeded with alkali metals as the working fluid, are capable of achieving greater than 55% overall conversion efficiency when used as a topping cycle in a combined steam and gas turbine power plant. Research is in progress towards improving generator performance by measurement and control of the seed fraction, application of spectroscopic plasma diagnostics, and development of methods for generator performance analysis.
The Thermo-Electrochemical Converter (TEC) is a thermally regenerative fuel cell using the reaction between Hydrogen and Lithium. Investigations of the behavior of hydrogen ions at the electrode-electrolyte boundary are in progress, aimed at realizing high reliability and performance. Work is also being done on conceptual design and systems analysis for a TEC power plant.
