2. Energy from Hydrogen
2. Energy from Hydrogen
Pollution from fossil fuel combustion products is a major threat to the global environment. Stoichiometric combustion of hydrogen and oxygen is free of pollution problems, and work in this area aims to establish the basic technology for large-scale power generation systems using hydrogen combustion. A small gas turbine system, which uses argon as the recirculating working fluid, has been developed and successful operation demonstrated. The work also includes investigation of the combustion characteristics of hydrogen-oxygen-steam
mixtures, and the development of new combustion control technologies using photochemical and surface reactions.
Theoretical work towards power plant optimization, including thermodynamic analysis of the turbine cycle and hydrogen net work, is also in progress.
