1. Wind Turbine Generator
Wind is a clean energy resource that has found increasing application for power generation worldwide. However, in countries like Japan, where hilly terrain gives rise to high turbulence levels and strong winds come annually during the typhoon season, there are particular problems with power reliability and plant lifetimes. The experimental wind generator, WIND-MEL U, which was installed at the Tsukuba Research Center No.2 in March 1994 which is a variable-speed flexible-design system. which incorporates progressive ideas and represents a significant technical advance in the field.
More basic research into wind generation is also in progress, including wind tunnel testing, numerical analysis using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and the development of new aerofoil sections of low noise and high performance.
