8. Machines for Care-giving
Patient Care Robot
Ambulatory apparatus with weight bearing control
Care givers for handicapped people or senior citizens often suffer from back injury caused by their lifting heavy weights under unstable conditions for example lifting patients from bed. A pneumatically driven actuator has been developed to reduce physical and psychological stress in these situations.
Long term confinement to a wheelchair often gives rise to secondary complications such as urinary problems or osteoporosis. There is therefore considerable demand for a walking device to help people who would normally be confined to a wheelchair move around independently. An aid to walking has been developed which closely simulates natural gait by controlling the length of the leg support, and allows handicapped people to walk on a level surface without large expenditure of energy.
