1. Scope of the Symposium
The Mechanical Engineering Laboratory (MEL) is currently undertaking a multi-national R&D project "Development of High Performance Metal Matrix Composites" together with China, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand within the framework of the Institute for Transfer of Industrial Technology (ITIT) program originated by the International R&D Cooperation Division of AIST. The project started in 1993 and is scheduled to be completed in March, 2000.
The objectives of this symposium are to discuss the results obtained in the project "High Performance Metal Matrix Composites" and to discuss planning a next project "Manufacturing Technology of Advanced Materials". Results of R&D in the following topics will be presented and the next step required for application to industries will be discussed:

(1)Fabrication and forming of metal matrix composites
Establishment of Al alloy matrix composite materials for automobile and aerospace parts
(2)Metal injection molding for conventional and advanced materials
High accuracy and property products for mechanical and electrical parts with micro and complicated shape
(3)Microfabrication of smart-material
Development of highly integrated micro-electromechanical devices

2. Schedule
